When we think of GenAI, we instantly think of popular tools like ChatGPT and how companies like OpenAI, Meta, Google, etc. are on a quest to create AGI. What the popular press does not tell you about is the less known part of the ecosystem that is driving this large scale innovation. The well-known ecosystem that consist of companies, VCs, founders, key-employees, etc. however the less known but critical part of the ecosystem are the frameworks, libraries and open-source tools.

That is where AutoGPT comes in. Created by Toran Bruce Richards, AutoGPT is an open-source application built on GPT-4. It is one of the fastest growing frameworks on GitHub:

AutoGPT is a gamechanger in the world of GenAI. If you have used chatgpt before, you must be aware of the idea of prompts. Prompt is a question that you ask chatgpt to fetch an answer. What AutoGPT does is that the user just provides a single prompt with an objective and AutoGPT will do the tasks on its own to achieve the goal.

The implication of this is immense.

For example, if one wants to penetrate a system, be it in a wireless environment or web, they will have to launch an exploit attack, use tools like kali linux, and check for vulnerabilities. Now imagine a situation where this entire system gets automated using tools like AutoGPT and having the right prompts.

Or software testing. Where you have a set of test that you give the system and connect it with different tools to check all the new feature releases by your team.

It is tools like AutoGPT, BabyAGI and other agents that are also giving sleepless nights to policymakers and forcing them to think of ideas like unviersal basic income. There will be large-scale disruptions when it comes to job market for roles like testing and programming.

We are still far from an AGI and using tools like AutoGPT still can be slightly expensive given the API calls it will have to make and the infastructre that one will have to invest in with vector databases and to manage the cost of compute power that will be needed to do the tasks. But if one wants to build a carrer in the field of artificial intelligence, knowledge of AutoGPT is going to become very critical.
